Dr. Ann Louise Smith

Dr. Ann Smith is a nurse practitioner and manager for the Pediatric Nurse Residency at Cook Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) in Fort Worth, Texas. Her clinical practice is in the Department of Anesthesia at CCMC. Her nursing education includes a diploma from Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing, baccalaureate and masters’ degrees from the University of Hawaii, Manoa and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Texas Woman’s University. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha, NE.

Dr. Smith’s experience includes 21 years in the United States Air Force and 13 years on faculty at Midwestern State University. Her 44-years in nursing are “dotted” with mission trips to Guatemala and Brazil, playing competitive basketball in five countries, and serving as a Red Cross Disaster Nurse. She enjoys volunteer ministry with the students at Texas Christian University, where her most recent bowling scores were 35 and 94 respectively!

Dr. Smith’s research interests focus on the development of new nurses. She has presented at the International Conference of Social Science Researchers, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, the National League for Nursing and American Nurses’ Credentialing Center Magnet Conference. In her clinical practice, she constantly “experiments” with individualized developmentally effective ways to engage children in their healthcare. Graduate students presented her with a plaque that reads, “The Child Whisperer”, which serves as a constant reminder of the respect that all children deserve.

In 2014, the National League for Nursing honored Dr. Smith with selection for the Outstanding Leadership in Workforce Development award, and in 2016 she was selected as one of the DFW Great 100 Nurses.
